After a brief three year hiatus, I am finally getting my digital strategy together… and Markipedia is back!

* Who invented brownies? Are they an ethnic food? Answer: According to Wikipedia, brownies were invented in Chicago prior to the 1893 Chicago World’s fair. * what is the difference between a “healthy 8” enneogram and an “unhealthy 8” enneogram? Answer: Below is the wikipedia summary of Eights. The Enneogram institute lists nine levels of Eights, with Level 1 being: “Level 1 (At Their Best): Become self-restrained and magnanimous, merciful and forbearing, mastering self through their self-surrender to a higher authority. Courageous, willing to put self in serious jeopardy to achieve their vision and have a lasting influence. May achieve true heroism and historical greatness.” Level 9 is a terrifying sociopath, so I won’t paste that description here.

Type: 8 Characteristic: Challenger Ego Fixation: Vengeance(Objectification) Holy Idea: Truth Basic Fear: Being harmed, controlled, violated Basic Desire: Self-protection Temptation: Thinking they are completely self-sufficient Vice: Passion: Lust(Forcefulness) Virtue: Innocence Stress: 5 Security: 2

* Why did I write down, “Little Giants — Annexation of Puerto Rico vs Flying V” Answer: Little Giants is a 1994 sports comedy, sort of like the 1992 film Mighty Ducks , but with junior league football. According to the wikipedia article on Fumblerooski, “The fumblerooski is featured as a play setting up the climax of the 1994 film Little Giants, in which the Little Giants score on the game’s final play. In the film, the play was called “The Annexation of Puerto Rico”  … so that solves the first two parts… but what is the flying V? Aha! Critically rated puts it this way, “This movie [Little Giants] is a rip-off of the Mighty Ducks. They just changed a few things, but it’s definitely the story of a crappy sports team that gets slightly uncrappier, and they win the big game. The Mighty Ducks had the Flying V; the Little Giants have the Annexation of Puerto Rico.” So there you go. This is a specific reference to how Little Giants ripped off Mighty Ducks.

But I am le tired… Well. Then. Have a nap. THEN FIRE ZE MISSILES!

* What is kombucha? (Union Market in Church Hill has it on tap) One person described it as “it looks like a jellyfish in urine,” and that making it involves a “Mother Fungus” and that it is fizzy. Answer: Kombucha is a fermented tea originating from China that spread to Russia around 1910. The weird part is that it is not just a single species that creates kombucha. The agent is a colleciton of organizms, known as a “symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY)” … Some people claim that it has medicinal properties, but these are not scientifically established.

* where did the termseersucker come from? Wikipedia quotes the American heritage Dictionary when it says, “The word came into English from Hindustani (Urdu and Hindi), and originates from the words “kheer aur shakkar”, literally meaning “milk and sugar”, probably from the resemblance of its smooth and rough stripes to the smooth texture of milk and the bumpy texture of sugar.”

* What is the history of Pony Pasture? Were there ever ACTUAL ponies there? According to Phil Riggan’s “Why Richmond Why” column from September 2012,

there was once a pasture there, and ponies were kept on the farm by the Brauer family.

“The name came from the 1960s when the area was suburban and people who were into housing their horses near the river,” said Ralph White, who has been the manager of the James River Park for nearly 32 years. Before Richmond annexed the area from Chesterfield County in the summer of 1969, the agrarian landscape was similar to what you’d see further west on Cherokee Road and Old Gun Road in the area near Bellona Arsenal.

The annexation wasn’t the end of the farm, it was mostly due to flooding from Hurricane Camille. Many horses on the farm had to be rescued as the waters in the James rose. The storm dumped 12-20 inches of rain in just a few hours on much of Virginia on August 19-20, 1969. Of course, much of than rain flowed into the James River and peaked at Pony Pasture at 24.91 feet on Aug. 21, 1969, according to the Westham gauge, which is located nearby. The flood stage is at 12 feet and the land at Pony Pasture can flood at about 18 feet.

In 1970, the James River Park opened and the public was given access to acres of meadows, small islands, woodlands and riverbanks.
